84:1 When the sky is rent asunder.1

Note 1

This is the 84th Surah of the Qur’an. It has 25 verses. It is common to find the exponents of the Qur’an applying too much emphasis on the Hereafter, Eschatology and Apocalypse. This is especially so concerning the 30th and the last section of the Qur’an. The Qur’an being a Book of guidance deals more with life on this earth than with death and the Hereafter. Resurrection and the Day of Judgment are unquestionably extremely significant and oft-repeated themes in the Book, but they invariably connect with how we spend our life on this planet. Moreover, numerous verses in the Qur’an apply simultaneously to the revolutions among nations and to the Ultimate Great Revolution in the Cosmos.

Likewise, the Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes that Paradise and Hell begin right here, in this life. A benevolent society is a Paradise on earth and a chaotic society is a Hell on earth. Mankind can build their Paradise by establishing the Divine System and then ‘inherit’ it in the Hereafter.

On an individual basis, whoever lives by the Divine Commands attains a state of inner peace and contentment and, in the process, primes his or her ‘self’ for Immortality, the ever-lasting Gardens of bliss.

This Surah briefly touches upon the advancement of mankind in science and technology.

With the Glorious Name of God, the Instant and Sustaining Source of all Mercy and Kindness

Space will be explored and Astronomy will bring amazing knowledge of the Cosmos

84:6 O mankind, you will be returning to your Lord with your actions and meeting Him.
The Monotheist Group (The Quran: A Monotheist Translation)
84:6 O man, you will be moving towards your Lord and meeting Him.
Muhammad Asad (The Message Of Quran)
84:6 [then,] O man - thou [that] hast, verily, been toiling towards thy Sustainer in painful toil4 - then shalt thou meet Him!

Note 4
An allusion to the fact that in man's earthly life - irrespective of whether one is consciously aware of it or not - sorrow, pain, drudgery and worry by far outweigh the rare moments of true happiness and satisfaction. Thus, the human condition is described as "painful toiling towards the Sustainer" - i.e., towards the moment when one meets Him on resurrection.
Rashad Khalifa (The Final Testament)
84:6 O humans, you are irreversibly heading for a meeting with your Lord.,
Shabbir Ahmed (Quran As It Explains Itself)
84:6 O You human being! You have been toiling on towards your Lord – painfully toiling – then you shall meet Him.4

Note 4
Wittingly or unwittingly, mankind is working their way toward the Divine System. Trial and Error can make them advance only to an imperfect and fragile system of life. But Divine revelation economizes human effort, saves them centuries of pursuit in toil, and ensures for them a perfect, enduring System of Life

Note 7
At first glance, this seems to contrast with 69:25, where it is stated that the record of the unrighteous "shall be placed in his left hand". In reality, however; the present formulation alludes to the sinner's horror at his record, and his wish that he had never been shown it (69:25): in other words, his not wanting to see it is symbolized by its appearance "behind his back".
Rashad Khalifa (The Final Testament)
84:7 As for the one who receives his record in his right hand,,

Thus God "calls to witness" the fact that nothing in His creation is ever at a standstill, since everything moves unceasingly from one state of being into another, at every moment changing its aspect and its condition: a phenomenon aptly described by the Greek philosopher Heraclitus by the phrase panta rhei ("everything is in flux").

Note 11
Since the inexorable movement of all that exists from stage to stage or from one condition into another corresponds to a fundamental law evident in all creation, it is unreasonable to assume that man alone should be an exception, and that his onward movement should cease at the moment of his bodily death, not to be followed by a change-over into another state of being.
